The Fireflies burn bright with self-titled debut EP

London duo’s six track release set for late July

The Fireflies

After a chance shuffling of desks in an Old Street office, Harry and Luca formed The Fireflies. They release their glittering debut EP in late July.

Having cast off suit, boot and tie for a career in the music industry, Harry (vocals, guitar) and Luca (guitar) are busy building their fast growing fan-base. They have already flown high with top quality recordings, a gig at the 2014 Trinity Cambridge May Ball and busking to huge crowds on London’s South Bank.

Voice, woven guitars and poetic lyrics are the trademark of The Fireflies’ debut six track album. Check out their first release, ‘Silver Leaflets’ :

Writing and performing is in The Fireflies’ DNA. Nephew of legendary actor Daniel Day-Lewis, Harry turned heads of record execs from Universal Music after an impromptu cover of ‘Superstition’ with The Noisettes at his uncle’s film premiere after party. He then opened for The Sugababes, and performed solo at the Montreux Jazz Festival with Oxford’s Big Band. Harry’s former harmonies group were crowned world runners up at ICCA (collegiate A Cappella), to a packed Lincoln Centre in New York, with his rendition of Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’. Following that, the group sold out three runs of The Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Already flying high, The Fireflies’ path is set to burn bright with the release of their new EP at the end of the month.

Future headline gigs:
The Troubadour on 24 July
The Bedford on 14 August
Clare Island Seafood Festival in Ireland on 22 August
Barfly Camden on 10 October

Rolly’s Syndicate – Little Mullu

Rolly’s Syndicate: Little Mullu

Rollys Syndicate are the Warwickshire based band, that are mixing contemporary blues and soul. They are now set to release a new album for the summer. Working together, Milli aids Roland with moving lyrics, whilst Ro’ brings the guitar backing.

You can take a listen to the band on Soundcloud:

Their music has that open air quality you only reall see in the Jazz genre. With great guitar playing and memorable lyrics, the band congregates together; to make a thoroughly enjoyable collection of moving and expressive tracks.

After a long period of co-operation with the band, Milli could no longer commit to the long term vision of the group. However, in honour of the bands history together, the Roland Syndicate decided to dedicate their debut album to Milli and her lyrical talents.

Fortunately, she happily agreed to collaborate on a short term basis. It’s for this reason that most of the lyrics in the album draw their influence from both the bands everyday life and Milli’s personal journey to this point.

The band has now picked a new vocalist from a selection of more than 30 applicants. Her name is Natalie Brown and the band tells us that she is as good as Milli!

Her background includes being the lead vocalist in the original band, StoneSoulUK from February 2006 to October 2013 (writing and performing mainly original material, as well as cover material). Natalie has also lent her vocal talents to the cover band ‘the Bottle’, whilst studying at university (1997-2000). Ontop of all this she has performed at major west midland venues such as The Yardbird, Victoria Square and The Malthouse.

Natalie Brown’s influences include Mary J Blige, Alicia Keys and Michael Jackson.

Hungarian born, Roland produced the album as part of achieving a degree at Staffordshire University. He has showcased his talents at many different live gigs such as: The Public (West Bromwich), Hare & Hounds (Birmingham), Bulls Head (Birmingham), Mixing Bowl Theatre (Birmingham). Roland said that he has played many live gigs but for him the biggest event was at the Sziget Festival.

On-top of these live shows, the group has also been featured on the ‘BBC Introducing’ series, played on Radio Warwickshire, Airplay & The Musical Journey show (live), Tweets & web mentions (Clay Lowe/SoulCuzer radio presenter), Radio Plus – Airplay & Live Room Session.

Through the years, Milli and Roland have developed a good understanding of the musical influences they wanted to follow, and thus developed a winning musical chemistry. Roland’s professionalism and creativity seemed to work well with Milli adding her soulful tones, as she is not only a talented vocalist, but also an amazing songwriter with a history in Drama and Literature.

Benny (drummer) & Luke (bass player) were both attracted to the the unique mix of Soul, contemporary Blues and a touch of jazzy elements, they both relate to in their own personal musical backgrounds.

Luke, the bass player in the band was born in Leamington Spa in 1992, picking up his first guitar at the age of 11. It was after watching the video of November Rain that Luke’s hobby turned into a lifelong passion. He has played from many names such as the African Kora players to Art rock bands and anyone else that would give him his next step into the starlight. His talent developed quickly due to dedication and his love to the art.

Benny, the band’s drummer, plays several styles including jazz, rock, blues and funk. He played in jazz trios, big bands, rock and punk bands through the years. He has recently played in the Boogie snakes and the Holly Perkins Bands. Making appearances on many different jam sessions around Oxfordshire. Bennys drum kit is a vintage Yamaha kit from 1973, Yamaha Vintage Series snare, Zildjian cymbals with Evans heads. The drummer says that his influencers are Dennis Chambers, Ed Thigpen and Zsolt Mike.

The Unique combination of styles and influences Rolly’s Syndicate produce demonstrates the colourful background of the group members, Roland’s Passion for blues from a Hungarian Background, Beni’s Amazing talent and vast experience playing with various bands and Luke’s alternative veins and passion for Jazz & World Music.

Colin Clyne rides the ‘Merry Go Round’ – latest single on June 30th

Upbeat acoustic roots tune taken from album ‘The Never Ending Pageant’ – released 21st July

JSisti_20130423_DSC7506-LScotland born folk singer-songwriter Colin Clyne, a versatile acoustic artist as comfortable spinning off an upbeat folk ditty as a heartrending dose of roots melancholy, returns this summer with excellent single ‘Merry Go Round’, taken from album ‘The Never Ending Pageant’.

The single, a straight, driving example of how to write an acoustic folk track with true momentum and subtle harmonies, mixes Clyne’s Scottish folk heritage with a touch of Americana in the vocal arrangements – thanks perhaps to 10 years spent living in California.

It’s the first song from the new LP, both released through Colin’s hometown label Fat Hippy Records, a burgeoning independent label who have also recently signed a deal with fellow Aberdonian – and runner up on The Voice USA – Terry McDermott.

The album was produced & Engineered by Grammy Award Winning Engineer Alan Sanderson (The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Ryan Adams, Burt Bacharach), and you can hear the first single here:

https://soundcloud.com/colinclyne/merry-go-round-1

It’s not difficult to see why his fans include influential new music tastemakers such as Jim Gellatly, John McRuvie, STV and Chris Hawkins of BBC 6 Music – the reflection of an impressive independent career that has seen Clyne support The Red Hot Chilli Pipers (internationally acclaimed Scottish touring band) at a Hogmanay gig in front of 6,000 people, as well as appearing at Belladrum Festival, Edinburgh Festival, The Viper Room in L.A, and the Sacramento Highland Games which boasts over 20,000 people.

Another highlight saw him crowned ‘Best Acoustic Act’ at the San Diego Music Awards in 2011 and 2012 (previously winners include Jewel and Jason Mraz), as well as being named by NBC San Diego as one of San Diego’s top 12 Singer songwriters. That particular list contained an elite list of names, including Jewel, Tom Waits and the late Jim Croce.

It marks an incredible career trajectory for an artist whose first cd was rehearsed and written in the cold store of a ship that he used to work in many years ago. In fact, the lifelong ship worker still does stints at sea from time to time, enjoying the time and space as good song writing inspiration.

All very impressive from an artist who, having severed his fingers in his teens having hardly learned a chord, didn’t touch a guitar again until he was 23.

Single ‘Merry Go Round’ will be released June 30th from the album ‘The Never Ending Pageant’ out July 21st.

Blues Rock/Country band Cowboy Hat release debut album ‘A History of The American West and Other Stories’

Released 3rd June 2014

London based Americana enthusiast Cowboy Hat is set to release debut album in June.

Could it be the best Alt. Country debut album you’ll hear this year? Well, it has already been described as ‘Timeless’ and ‘Lyrically breath taking’. With some strong lyrics based around a historical theme, alongside the rich warm vocals from Nigel Barker, it is certainly an album worth listening to.

Check out track ‘Yeah I Love The South’ Here: http://youtu.be/hfrp-70bX5w

And ‘These Men Dreamed America’ Here: http://youtu.be/qJqhAbH6rZI

Singer songwriter Nigel Barker formed Cowboy Hat in 2012 in London which is surprising as the songs are heavily influenced by American music and history. With band members changing over time, he is the only official member of this innovative country rock band.

Nigel Barker’s musical life hasn’t always been an easy ride. When assistant engineering at Air Montserrat Recording Studios for the Elton John ‘Jump Up’ album, he encountered a terrible accident.

On one of his rare days off he crashed his car off a steep drop, the car was upside down and if it hadn’t been for an off duty cop, Nigel would have bled to death. Whilst he narrowly escaped death, he was left without the use of his left hand, which at the time came at a huge blow to his music career as he could not continue on with the record deal he had signed just months ago.

As at this stage Nigel could not continue his dream of music he used his creative energies to become film director, even though he saw some great success creating 3 feature films and winning awards for his work, it didn’t fill that hole that music had left in his life.

Nigel didn’t play his guitar for 30 years after the accident, however after 17 years he got a Harley Davison motorcycle and Nigel believes it was the heavy clutch that built the strength back into his left hand.

When he rediscovered music, he went out and bought the very same guitar he had all those years ago (A sunburst Gibson Les Paul). He spent 18 hours a day practicing until he learnt to play again.

Now back and stronger than ever Nigel is stepping into the spotlight with Cowboy Hat, the music is, raw, rich and full of power. The vocals and lyrical content really are the backbone of this fantastic release. There are big things to come for this innovative record and inspiring man.

Steve Murray releases single ‘Angels & Butterflies’

Steve MurrayPart of the New Wave era with the band Fast Cars, Steve Murray is back with a new sound, a new album and a new single.

The acoustic rock track ‘Angels & Butterflies’ is an uplifting track about overcoming adversity, with a strong country vibe and a distinctive vocal performance by Murray himself. It’s a great example of the new approach he’s taken for his new album, a mellow, stripped back style of rock that suits his voice perfectly.

You can hear the single here: https://soundcloud.com/labelled-independent/steve-murray-kingbird-angels

The LP itself, ‘Audio Book’, was released to raise funds for  a charity called “Georgia’s Children of the World” set up by Steve and his daughter Georgia’s friends,  after  she unfortunately passed away following complications in her third heart operation. Available now but slated for a possible re-issue early in 2014, it’s a strong collection of songs full of positive messages, a value it shares with its writer.

‘Audio Book’ is the latest release in an enviable musical career. As well as working on projects alongside the likes of Mark Riley (6 Music), Paul Weller and The Jam and Joy Division, Steve Murray was the songwriter of ‘The Kids Just Wanna Dance’ – a Fast Cars single that is now amongst the top 20 most collectible from the period. Recently released on an album by Californian band Emily’s Army, the song was hand picked by Billy Joe Armstong of Green Day who also produced the album which features his son Joey on drums
